The pandemic has further highlighted significant issues in the education sector, including the shortage of available teachers. Brookings cites that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) identified three significant contributors to the teacher shortage in 2020 – layoffs, which rose 57% from 2019 to 2020; employee turnover from voluntary quits (e.g., retirement and other separations); and slower hiring processes.
