The pandemic has further highlighted significant issues in the education sector, including the shortage of available teachers. Brookings cites that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) identified three significant contributors to the teacher shortage in 2020 – layoffs, which rose 57% from 2019 to 2020; employee turnover from voluntary quits (e.g., retirement and other separations); and slower hiring processes.

We surveyed our partner schools across the country to understand their current and upcoming hiring needs, and the factors most impacting their demand for teachers. COVID remains a significant factor. However, it has affected the varying school types in different ways.

We also took a look at the impact of COIVD on Selected's candidate pool, and the demand of schools on our platform. Download the Mid-Year Report for Summer 2021 to find out more about this season's candidate pool.
